Alestorm – Sunset on the Golden Age – 2014

Sunset on the Golden Age

Say what you will about Alestorm and their album Sunset on the Golden Age, but they have undeniably found their niche and stick to it rigorously. They call their style True Scottish Pirate Metal, and it’s a fantastic description of what it’s all about. That’s precisely how it sounds—catchy melodies that carry the scent of saltwater. The sound is easily recognizable and, in that regard, quite accessible.

The problem is that once you’ve heard one song, you’ve heard them all. It’s, of course, an exaggeration, but not far from the truth. While I haven’t heard everything the band has released, with Black Sails at Midnight in mind, I feel I have enough data to make such a statement. Therefore, it becomes somewhat monotonous even before the Sunset on the Golden Age concludes, which is a shame because I believe bands like Alestorm should be commended. Those willing to break free and pursue their own style are commendable.
