Marco Luponero and the Loud Ones – the War on Science – 2023
I would never had discovered The War on Science with Marco Luponero and the Loud Ones if I hadn’t been part of a gazillion Facebook groups. There’s something good coming from being a part of social media that’s for sure. You don’t have to rely on yourself to cover printed magazines and new news and/or record releases yourself as you did in the old days. There’s always someone else who knows more about it than yourself. You can only be Head Over Heels into so many bands. Speaking for myself, those bands are perhaps a handful and even then I have too much on my mind to keep track.
Discoveries are rare if you don’t just go out on a streaming service and take a chance, gamble if you like. But as I said, someone posted this and described the music briefly. It was enough for me to think it sounded very interesting. I think this guy compared them with Motörhead and Mustasch. Two fine bands that do their own thing. Motörhead för sure did their own thing up until the very end and the death of Lemmy.
But it’s a valid comparison. There are similarities with Motörhead here. I don’t think The War on Science is as simple and direct as any of the Motörhead albums though. It may not sound complex at first glance but when you listen more deeply you’ll hear part and layers that makes it even better. I would also like to compare them a bit to Peer Günt and Hellacopters. It’s not Metal, it’s not pure Rock or Hardrock either. And It’s not Rock n’ Roll as Lemmy described Motörhead as. It’s all of the above and I like it!
Very Well Produced
It’s very well produced and the singing is energetic. It’s not vitreous in any way but I don’t think they claim to be either. The production and mixing is great and I don’t have any complaint about the sound at all. At least not when listening through my headphones which gets me the best sound these days. I have neglected my HiFi equipment for far too long, so long that I don’t have the energy (or the money) to resume that development. I’m not even sure If I was that interested in spending thousands on equipment änyway. It was always more what the music was than how it sounded from an analytical sound perspective for me anyway.
But there’s one downside to it. It’s a bit too eclectic. I can put my finger on it. All of the songs are very good. I like them. I like the production and I like the sound of them. But there’s a part of me that doesn’t get the concept. It’s kind of all over the place. Pure Rock n’ Roll, some Metal and I even found one song sounding a bit like a traditional Irish song to me. All good but they don’t necessarily fit together. Hence a little lower rating than if the was some more consensus to it. Still a very nice album and a band that I want to hear more from!
