Monsternado – 2023
If you thought it was farfetched with the Sharknado movies, think again. Monsternado takes it all one step further. I don’t even know where to begin. The story itself is not much worse than all of the other silly and stupid monster movies that have been coming out in recent years. Monsternado is most definitely inspired by the Sharknado movies but I guess everyone seeing the title figured that much out already. Basically, it’s about this storm, or tornado, originating in the Bermuda Triangle and apparently bringing all kinds of creatures with it as it blows onward on land.
First of all, there are sharks of course. Too many of them I would say. Not because there are so many of them really, but we’ve already seen it before in a gazillion follow-ups to Sharknado. But let’s start from the beginning. Early on, almost immediately when the movie begins there is this scientist who had been the laughingstock of his colleagues for decades. He gets some seismic readings and immediately concludes that he has been right all along and that his theories are becoming true. We don’t really get any background. This is just an established fact.
More Depth
We should have been given some insight into what his theories were really about. That would have made the story a little more believable. Not that prehistoric monsters coming up from hell in a tornado via the Bermuda Triangle makes it any easier to believe. It’s not very plausible. But it could have used a little more depth in that department. Maybe Derek Miller who wrote the film and also plays the lead understood that no one would even care about those parts anyway and just skipped it. Well, I would have wanted an extra minute or two there. I would rather miss out on some of the action scenes.
But, as in all of these movies, he contacts the authorities. I think it’s FEMA in this case. Of course, he’s still considered to be a lunatic with impossible theories, way too unbelievable to be true. It doesn’t matter how much proof he provides. No one will ever believe him. Well, hint.. he was right and all kinds of creatures come in overland in the tornado. A tornado, or in this case a Monsternado, according to this scientist will continue to gain energy until it reaches the North Pole. We’re talking about tremendous power here.
Parallel to this where have this other storyline which I don’t really get. We have some undercover agent bringing down a criminal. A very bad man, guilty of murder, drug smuggling, trafficking and you name it. It seems so out of place that it’s really funny. It seems like someone thought it would be a nice idea to put Charlie Angels in the center of the story along with Sharks, Prehistoric Gators, and flying whatever-they’re-called. Actually, it is pretty funny. This part of the story is so out of place that it’s hilarious.
The Acting
The acting is quite bad most of the time though. I think they are trying their best but they can’t bring any emotion through the lens at all. The lines are delivered quite okay, but none of it is even remotely believable. The dialog is pretty bad too. There are some funny twists and turns but mostly it’s just stupid in my book.
But it’s not all bad, even if I might make it sound that way. Well, it’s a bad movie for sure, but it’s funny. There are some parts that weigh up the bad parts a bit. I certainly hope that Mosternado was a movie made to be serious. No, it can’t be. As in all of these kinds of movies, you have to guess who’ll be dinner to some animal and won’t be alive at the end. I was wrong and a couple of points and that should count for something. It’s always good to be a little surprised. Some come back from the presumed dead and make a final outburst and some just…survive.
Monsternado is a bad flick for sure, but pretty funny at times! Some of the monsters are even pretty well made!
