The Sweet – Heroes of my youth!
When I grew up there was this great record in my mom’s record shelf. Not that she and I never shared any preferences and I figure this was bought by mistake. However, The Sweets Golden Greats was a record I came to love among those pieces of vinyl. So much, that I managed to convince her to give the album to me when I moved away from my childhood home. I still have it, but in the age of digital music and streaming services, I don’t listen much to it anymore. To the actual Vinyl that is. The songs on there are immortal!
Most of the really good ones were written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Demon producers of the seventies. It the time I didn’t realize this and I search everywhere for more albums by the Sweet too. I didn’t even realize the “the Golden Greats” was a compilation. I just figured it was a great album!
But during my “record collecting years” I found a few singles and a few album at record fairs. Always as excited as the time before and always as disapointed. No album was ever up to par with the Golden Greats. In hind sight it makes sense. Of course the Greatest Hits album would out perform the studio albums. But I’m still on the lookout for more Sweet albums. I don’t really go to record fairs anymore so I guess I’ll have to find a CD re-issue somewhere. It’s not an active search but eventually I’ll get there.
