Stay out of the F**cking Attic is a movie title that brings a few things to mind. First of all, the phrasing by using the F-word brings a little vibe of comedy and that we should not take this film too seriously. Second of all, it suggests that there is something in the attic that you don’t want to escape. That’s my interpretation of the title anyway.
The first part of my conclusion, that we should take it too seriously and that it has comedic aspects, is unfortunate. Because I think we really should take this film seriously. Sure, there are far fetched ideas and the main story might not be very plausible but just the mere thought or what might happen is enough to give me the chills.
The second part of my assumption is kind of true. There is indeed something in the attic, as it is also in the basement. If we need to keep it locked up or if it’s just a secret being stored there is another matter. I think there might be a little bit of both actually. There are indeed secrets in the old house that no one of the involved moving company hired to move the furniture thought possible.
It’s hard to get into detail, because even if you might get some information of what’s really going on on imdb etc, I would advise against it. You’re better off not knowing what to come. Knowing too much spoils the surprise I think. Let’s just say that there might be monsters in the house, but not as supernatural as the title suggests. This has more to do with science. With a little sci-fi mixed in to be fair.
But it’s also a movie about what you have in your luggage, your history. You may have done things in the past that you aren’t proud of or even are ashamed of. But it’s never too late for redemption. There’s also an element of how hard it can be to forgive yourself for your past errors even if others, people close to you, are willing to do it.
Anyway, the film starts off with this moving company arriving at an old house. They have been given the task to move everything, but there is a time limit. The payment is very generous and they feel like they can’t say no. Their instructions explicitly say that they need to have everything out by morning, so it’s an all nighter for them. They are also instructed that the owner of the house will deal with the attic and basement by himself. Something that seems strange as he’s a very old man. Everything is not how it should be.
We, the audience, think that there will be problems, that they won’t be finished in time. And we’re also wondering what’s hiding in the attic. The characters are a little over the top overall, but somehow it fits into the concept and I think the acting, for the most part, is really really good. I believe in them, they show genuine emotions. Especially the closer to the main events starts to unfold.
That old man bears a grave secret, so do the movie personnel. We get some clues here and there just before it’s explicitly told to us, I had guessed it. I’m willing to give that a pass. It wasn’t like it was super obvious from the start. I enjoyed it and I like the twists presented in it. I might not be super positive about the ending and the behaviour of the characters all the time, but for the most part I really liked this. Oh, and there’s one more scene after the credits.
