Prequelle is the fourth studio album by the Swedish band Ghost. Early on there’s a noticeable difference between the previous albums. This is starting to go more towards Metal, there is more emphasis on the guitars and the vocals are also a bit harsher from time to time. You could say that there’s more attitude behind the songs. Something that I enjoy. I have felt the lack of this aspect on the first few albums. I welcome the chance in the sound for sure!
I also feel that the arrangements are a bit bigger and worked-through than before. There are more layers to be discovered while listening. It’s not just riffs, guitars or vocals, there are harmonies with keyboard and/or choirs that I think suits the songs very well.
Now, I’m not saying this is a full fledged Metal album, but it leans towards it in another way than the previous albums. On occasion there’s also a bit harsher vocals than the otherwise very smooth singing. It’s mostly the same recognizable delivery of the vocals as usual though.
On several of the songs it’s clear that there has been a collaboration with other songwriters. I think this is a good thing. It evolves the musical landscape a bit. I think it’s easy to think that you write good songs yourself and when you take other people’s input and ideas into the equation you get something where the whole is more than the parts combined. It’s also very nicely produced which makes it very attractive for the ears.
