St Anger is the album that came after my initial disappointment with Load and Reload already had taken it’s toll on me. I have revisited both albums recently and have found them not to be such a disaster as my younger self thought them to be. St Anger on the other hand is an album that I, after re-acquaintance my self with it, never need to torture myself with ever again. It’s abysmal. I hate it!
The sound design and production sucks big time. I cannot fathom how Bob Rock could sign his name to this disaster! He even took on the role as bassist as Jason Newsted had quite the band prior to St Anger. I realize of course that the band wasn’t in a very good place when St Anger was recorded. I mean, I have seen the documentary Some Kind of Monster too. It was not a healthy environment to be part of, that’s for sure.
It does not sound as Metallica one bit. The drums are sounding horrible and the guitars are barely there at all. There’s certainly no memorable riffs present. I can tell that it’s James Hetfield singing but that’s about it. No, this is an album that I will continue to hate with a passion!
