Helloween is the 16th studio album by the German Power Metal band Helloween. I haven’t followed them very closely in recent years and kind of lost interest after the amazing Keeper of the Seven Keys albums. I also like the first albums, Wall of Jericho and the debut EP where Murderer still is my favorite Helloween track of all time.
A lot has happened within the band since then (of course) Kai Hansen left and came back. Michael Kiske left and did also come back. Still the long time singer Andi Deris remained, which means that the band has THREE lead singers and THREE guitarists! At first glance you could believe that this would make a mess. But look at Iron Maiden with their three guitarists or Accept with their three guitar album Too Mean to Die which is, in my opinion, their best album ever.
Three lead singers though, wouldn’t that create chaos? No, it works fine. There’s duetts and different techniques and harmonies coming from them. They’ve got the whole range. The best of all worlds you could say. Besides, one of the characteristics that I have found in Helloweens music from the very start is the melodic baselines. They’re still as present as ever and that är big plus för me.
This self-titled album from 2021 does not disappoint. It’s not fantastic but absolutely worthy of spinning a few times. You get about what you asked for, and in my book that is always what to strive after.
