This is probably the most anticipated book of the year. If you’re into controversial filmmaking and extreme film in the most literal sense of the word, you’ve probably heard about Guerilla Metropolitana by now. His films may not be over the top gory, as you’d usually expect when you hear the term extreme filmmaking, but his films are certainly on another level. I Link to the review I have made below.
Searching for the Perfect Butterfly is a biography though, written by the very talented Del Gibson, who I have been fortunate enough to lure in to write some reviews for ActiveContext.net as well. Now, I haven’t read this yet, but I knew I needed to own it. In my mind I’m the first in Sweden to own it. It’s presumptuous of me of course, but let me live in my little bubble of satisfaction. I have read a couple of her anthologies though and I’ll also link to those reviews below.
Now, the book Searching for the Perfect Butterfly is about 300 pages and it’s absolutely gorgeous. It goes through the early life of the director, includes lots of images and is a documented journey from the very beginning of Guerilla Metropolitana, the early short films, which I, myself have not had the opportunity to see, to the feature Dariuss and the final film The Benefactress. I say final film because as far as I understand it he feels like his journey in the cinematic universe has come to a close. Only time will tell I guess. In any case, it’s certainly the most recent one.
Reviews of the films by Guerilla Metropolitana
Dariuss is Guerrilla Metropolitana’s first feature film. Well, it’s actually kind of balancing on the edge between a short film and a feature since it’s just over an hour. I’m not sure if there’s an official time stamp for it, but I’ve always heard that to be taken as a feature film, you need at least 70 minutes. Nevermind, most flicks these days are too long for their own good anyway. It’s better to tell the story and get it over with than to include endless scenes that don’t really contribute to anything. Corporate Torment is a short film by Guerrilla Metropolitana that was rejected from all film festivals. And it’s certainly not a film for everyone. I cannot stress that enough. If you are afraid of what you might find, DO NOT seek this film out. It is included on the DVD releases of both Dariuss and The Benefactress by the same director, though. Read More
The Benefactress is an experimental art film by director Guerrilla Metropolitana. I haven’t previously seen any of his films, which consists mostly of shorts apart from Dariuss, a feature film for which he gained a underground following. I have read up a bit though and it seems like the nature of his style is highly personalized. Read More
The Books of Del Gibson
Mistress of the Dark – Stories of the Macabre (volume 1) is Del Gibson’s debut anthology. I can’t say that my level of anticipation didn’t skyrocket when I got this book just the other day. And though this is not really about the book itself, but rather the first story in it, I must comment on the amazing quality of the cover. It’s like touching something with a texture between silk and velvet! I absolutely love it! Read More
Ok, first off, to set a baseline for this volume of short stories from the mind of Del Gibson. There’s a difference between this one and the first volume. Again, it has nothing to do with the actual words or the stories but in volume 2 the layout pleases me much more. I can’t say that I’m necessarily a traditionalist, because I like when things are done unconventionally, I love experimental films etc. Why should you be “forced” into a fold and do it like everyone else?
