Terrestrial is a movie from 2025. I think it’s marketed as a thriller-scifi-horror film or something like that. And as it contains some sort of alien/monster, I can’t really disagree with that. At least not the Sci-Fi part. In the teaser some kids are exploring a cave or something similar, and suddenly we see tentacles, and the child is grabbed into darkness. It’s never scary, though, nor unexpected. That is the thread that goes through the whole movie. It has very predictable imagery throughout the whole experience.
If it’s supposed to be scary at some point, it is a catastrophic result. I don’t know why, but it’s impossible to take anything seriously. It’s just a ridiculous movie. There’s little background to the characters, there’s no motivation for anything, and there are no engaging actors. I think they do the best they can and that the script is the major problem. Even though it should be scary at times, you should feel a connection to the victims; that never happens. It’s just ridiculous and one of the very few movies that I had a real struggle finishing lately.
It’s bad; it’s really bad, but never so bad that it becomes a turkey. I’m not sure at all, but it seems to me like Terrestrial is made for a serious purpose, and that makes it so much worse. If it had some self-distance, I could live with it. But if this is dead serious, it’s not even funny by mistake. As I said, it’s not even a turkey.
The makeup effects when it comes to the monster/alien are pretty good. But the execution of using it is like it came from a school project. It just becomes ridiculous!
