Dream Evil – Metal Gods – 2024

Dream Evil

Dream Evil is a Swedish Power Metal band. They were formed in 1999. I may have heard them before but I’m not sure. At least it’s not a band I usually listen to or have loads of references to in the back of my brain. I guess the band name is inspired by the Dio album by the same title. Maybe I’m over analyzing this but that is my conclusion.

I listened to a few song and had no idea what the band really was. I knew nothing of it’s history or origin, and suddenly it hit me – this is a Swedish accent. Subtle perhaps but still it was there. Of course I had to look it up and there is was. I guess I’m not totally deaf yet. It’s usually very hard to hear accents in music i think so I’m pretty impressed by myself. I pad myself on the shoulder.

Power Metal

Initially I was expecting Dio cover songs. But even though I’m not familiar with Dio full discography and all the songs they recorded I don’t really find a trace of it. It doesn’t really seem influenced by the late singer. Dream Evil may be connected though lyrics only. Though the musical style is more Power Metal than Heavy Metal, the lyrics are stuff you would associate with Dio. There’s fantasy themes all over the place. I’m not sure there’s actual dragons and rainbows there, but you get the point.

Musically it’s a really stable album. I guess the closet thing to reference to at this point is the other great Power Metal band from Sweden – Hammerfall. They don’t sound the same and I feel like Dream Evil take a little different approach than Hammerfall. When it’s not certain if Hammerfall take themselves too seriously, since their style is so typical that they may actually be a bit ironic against themselves.

Serious!

Maybe music shouldn’t be taken too seriously anyway. But I feel like Dream Evil doesn’t get caught in this trap, if it is even is a trap, it’s a successful band to say the least. So what is the bottom line. It’s a good Power Metal album but it lacks that last touch to make it great och fantastic. You get about what you think you’d get. Nothing more and nothing less. You could do worse than to check out Dream Evil!
