Coma of Souls is the fifth studio album by the German Thrash Metal band Kreator. With Coma of Souls I feel they took a little step back in speed and aggressivity and presented an album that is more rooted in traditional Heavy Metal. I think it was well needed as a break. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still pretty wild, but it’s not as angry as the previous albums. Maybe they were thinking about more commercial success?
With that said, it’s certainly not a sell-out as one could argue that some of the major Thrash Metal bands has been accused of. It still sounds fresh and like Kreator! It’s also the longest album so far in the bands discography. I personally feel that the compositions are for thought through than before. It’s not just jamming and finding fast riffs that suit the songs. There are a bit more structure to it.
Mille Petrozza (vocals, guitar) wrote all the lyrics and Kreator as a band is credited for the music. This time Frank Godszik plays the other guitar. Jürgen Reil plays the drums and bass duties is handled by Rob Fioretti. It might not be the most exciting album Kreator has created (haha), but it’s good craftsmanship and certainly an album that attracts me!
