Mr Buzzkill is a slasher from 2025. As all good slashers, well many of them anyway, it has a cool masked killer. But it all begins with a campfire and somebody is telling a story about the massacre and the infamous “Mr Buzzkill”. Apparently it took place just about on the location where they are right now, what a shocker! (the irony, oh, the irony!) As the story is told we are shown the told events in the flashbacks.
These flashbacks are pretty extensive at times. So much so, that the most of the movie is actually being told in these flashbacks. First we get the back story which takes place years before the “main” massacre if you want to call it that. I think this is kind of unnecessary and ,ight not be that particularly well made. I understand what the idea is, to give the killer some more depth. But do we really need it? Let’s have some cool ways to murder people, and lets get to it already!
Once we get to the main part, the main flashback so to speak, the acting is pretty good. Of course, there are some sequences that are a little better than others and some are a little bit worse. But most of the time I think the acting, the characters themselves and the dialog is pretty good. Some of the characters are really hilarious and I like the way they put som sexual innuendos and wordplay in there. A girl desperately tried to get laid but the guys are too stupid or too stoned to realize it.Hahaha!
The kill scenes are always important in a slasher. The same thing here, some are pretty boring and predictable. There could be more ingenuity in some aspects there. I’m nitpicking as usual of course. But most of them, especially in the latter part of the film, are really cool. There are some really inventive ones, which likes I have never seen before. But at the same time, there are some ridiculous choices of murder weapons, like a small hammer. A small hammer in the hands of a really large individual, as the Mr Buzzkil, looks kind of silly.
Speaking of tools. There is a buzzsaw included in some of the murders (duh!) but most of them are performed in other manners. I think that is a good thing, because the few scenes including the saw are a little repetitive and the other murder scenes are a little cooler so be frank. The buzzsaw created lots of bloody mess of course and it becomes a little splattery at times.
I like splatter as much as the next gut, but there’s a time and a place for it. In the context of the rest of the tone and in slasher as a concept I feel that artistic drop of blood is often more efficient than buckets of blood pouring out of someone, or guts for that matter. And rest assure, most of the kills scenes are not over the top, which is nice.
But regardless of the choice of murder instruments, Mr Buzzkill is a cool title for a film and the cover art kicks ass! Because, let’s be honest, that’s the first thing we see and can mean the difference between if we decide to give the movie a chance or not. Especially these days when we’re overflown by all kinds of media all the time.
There are, of course, some scenes that are pretty foreseen. I don’t say that it’s necessarily a bad thing. There is also something positive to come by using the cliches. All in all I was entertained and I basically thought it was a nice slasher. Nothing outstanding, not great, but good enough to distinguish itself among the plethora of slashers out there.
… and yes, there is a “Crazy Ralph” in there as well!
