Say Cheese 2 is an independent horror feature film directed by Frank Palangi and it runs for 1 hour and 23 minutes.
Storyline: The nightmare isn’t over. This cursed 80s camera captures more than memories, it captures death. Once you are in its lens, there’s no escape. In Say Cheese 2, the killings continue as the camera chooses its next victims, one photo at a time.
My Review: I really enjoyed the segway from the first film into this sequel, Say Cheese 2, where it carries on from where it left off and the Say Cheese monster is back for revenge on the township of Warren County causing death and destruction. The 80s camera is back and causing more victims to fall into its grasp where it takes the souls of those who dare to take a picture with it. It has supernatural powers, and I feel the panic it is causing as more people become aware of its existence through media outlets and podcasters. Just Ricks (played by Aaron Michael Lambert) the podcaster whose passion is hunting down serial killers; we follow on with Cassie’s story as she tries to outrun not only the trauma from the assault she received in the first film, but she also has to escape the grip the Say Cheese monster (played by the director himself, Frank Palangi) has on her.
The storyline is great with twists and turns to keep you invested in the film. It’s a bloody gory film with some great horror scenes to please all horror and gore fans out there. We also see the origin story of how the camera came into existence. There is also a great scenario that adds to its history and how in the future the maker of the camera Mr. Omar (played by Lonny Eaton) could have initiated something dreadful to happen across the world. It’s a thought provoking situation and it plays on the selfie thread really well. The panic it initiates is terrifying and has everyone freaking out.
The ending sequence had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I like the fact there is no predictable ending, it could have played out in many different ways. There are some great resolutions and to top it off they are all running out of time. What will happen when the camera is full, will it mean the end of the world? Who will come out of this alive? I won’t spoil it, but it’s a great twist and make sure to watch after the credits for a wonderful surprise!
Overall, the cinematography, the experimentation of colours and the way light plays into the film is what I also enjoyed in the first film. It’s helped along with Frank Palangi’s epic musical pieces. There’s a certain creepy dread in the images; the old rundown buildings and setting evoke a sense of terror throughout the film. The variety of different camera movements, irregular angles, SOV filming and closeup shots make this a gruelling watch.
I also think it is a great move that the format has changed as this shows me that Palangi is transgressive and developing on his already amazing skills and talent as a filmmaker and a musician. Instead of the story arc commencing with short films, broken up into chapters, this one is linear in places, but then we jump back and forth, there are great flashback scenes, and I appreciated the recap from the first film, as this means it intrigues the audience enough to want to watch this one’s predecessor, which is always a bonus. With the use of captions to tell us where we are, and what year we are in helps to keep the story easy enough to follow.
I commend the acting, everyone played their roles with total commitment. The terror that follows Cassie (played by Jolie Wells) is enough to keep the intensity levels high and the momentum flowing. It’s also great to see Palangi reprise his role as the Say Cheese monster. His talent with the direction, script, editing as well as his music – we can see this filmmaker is making a name for himself in the independent horrorsphere. This is another enjoyable film from this director, with lots of blood and gore, a solid storyline and a thick plot. I highly recommend you watch both of these films, and I am certain you will enjoy them as much as I did.
