Light of Blood is a werewolf, sci-fi, action feature film directed by Gustavo Perez and it runs for 1 hour and 32 minutes.
International spies are invading Havana, Cuba in order to steal the formula to the super soldier serum. After two soldiers are inoculated, bodies are turning up everywhere, and now these spies have a new threat standing in their way!
My Review: There’s a serum that makes people have supernatural abilities, but it does come with a price. Tony (played by the director himself) is about to be executed for messing around with the wrong woman, however said woman, who is one of the scientists to discover and enhance the serum, she intervenes and instead of Tony facing the firing squad she decides to inject him with the serum to spare his life. What he turns into is a merciless monster who is going around murdering people as he begins to transform and lose total control of his humanity. I like the psychological thread coming through, begging the question – how does one remain human when the beast is inside your body and its animalistic characteristics and desire for blood takes over?
Coincidentally, the police employ Tony to help track down the killer that is slaughtering people without a care, and indiscriminately he doesn’t have a target, no one is safe in Cuba. The police decide to coverup the murders by saying they were mauled to death by a rogue dog. Meanwhile Russian spies are trying to get their hands on the formula. There are some good action scenes, and I think it’s a good storyline. The experimentation with the camera shots is clever, the makeup is well done for the wolfmen, and I enjoyed the 1990s horror werewolf vibe. Of course there are many films about werewolves, and it’s a common trope, but I think this film is a great addition to the wonderful legend of the wolf. We find out some backstory about the wolfmen, what harms them, and the lore, which is good as it adds depth to the film.
Halfway through the police find Tony doing something he shouldn’t be and a fight ensues. The police are no match for wolfman Tony. Tony seems to have been lost to his wolf-self, where he remains most of the time, and he needs to be caught, so the police devise a plan. But will they be able to get to him before he kills again? He is upset that he has turned into a monster and exacts his revenge upon the people responsible, even his friends aren’t safe. All the while more monsters are being created, which is great as it adds flesh and layering to the story arc. The ending delivered an unexpected twist I didn’t see coming, so I am happy with the ending sequence.
Overall the transformation scenes are fun to watch. The setting in Cuba really sets the scene, the vibe of an old horror film is a good move, the storyline is good and the plot worked out well. The only issue I have is with the sound quality, sometimes it was a challenge to hear the dialogue. I did get a little confused about Tony walking around during the day as it doesn’t go with the lore of the werewolf, but then again I think it has something to do with the serum and not a hole in the plot. The acting was good enough for me to recommend this one to watch if you like films about werewolves.
