Alone in the Dark certainly doesn’t seem to have a very high standing among film lovers around the world, and if you look at databases such as IMDb, it is placed on a rather unflattering list of the worst movies of all time. Honestly, I don’t understand why, because I thought it was pretty good! It is, of course, a movie based on a video game, and from what I have understood, people have an even harder time accepting differences between these mediums than when it comes to movies based on literary works.
Add to this the fact that Uwe Boll is credited as the director, and he doesn’t have a particularly high standing among people either. But as I said, I think the movie works perfectly well; it is action-packed and features decent performances from bigger names such as Christian Slater and Stephen Dorff. Although, on the other hand, perhaps they don’t need an excessive amount of direction to perform their roles well.
I also like the story. They have incorporated an ancient culture that discovered a passage between the world of good and the world of evil and then failed to close the door in time. The creatures that are hinted to have slipped through the opening are portrayed well. They are, of course, computer-generated, but they are not bad in any way. They have managed to stay right on the borderline between not showing too much while at the same time not hiding more than necessary. No, I don’t understand the criticism, I like this!
