This is a fairly straightforward album that doesn’t hide any real surprises. Musically, it sounds a little as if Michael Bruce is back and helping out with the compositions, but that isn’t actually the case. Dick Wagner, on the other hand, is back, playing guitar and also having a hand in writing a couple of the songs.
There aren’t any real hits on the album, at least not if we’re talking in anything resembling a commercial sense, but the album still contains several of my favorite Alice songs: Make That Money (Scrooge’s Song), I Am the Future, which found its way into the cult movie Class of 1984, as well as the three almost interconnected songs Adaptable (Anything for You), I Like Girls, and Remarkably Insincere, which are connected not only musically but lyrically as well. The only song that really stands out is probably No Baloney Homosapiens, and that’s not in any positive sense!
Lyrically, it’s among the funniest things Alice has ever released, with song titles and lines like I’m Alive (That Was the Day My Dead Pet Returned to Save My Life). But it never goes too far or loses its charm, and I really like this album. It’s still a footnote in his career, much like the two previous albums Special Forces and Flush the Fashion, but it sits right on the timeline and works as some kind of link between the good old days and the more modern sound that would soon arrive!
