Anyone who has seen the magnificent Battleship (2012) will immediately understand that this is a film designed to ride somewhat on its wave. This is definitely not some big-budget production, quite the opposite. The infamous The Asylum is behind it, and you can expect quite a bit of plagiarism!
Obviously, it’s the better-known Battleship that has to give up most of its plot, but it doesn’t take particularly long before you also find outright dialogue thefts from Star Trek. Not only do they refer to a ship called the USS Enterprise (which in itself might not be that strange), they also discuss the cloaking device that makes the enemy ship invisible using almost exactly the same dialogue as they did when they discovered the same thing in a Star Trek episode from the ’60s! And that’s not all, they soon start joking about Klingons too!
Surpringly good acting
The actors are actually surprisingly good. There’s not all that much to complain about when it comes to them. Granted, they have enormously two-dimensional characters to work with, but they manage to deliver believable lines. I was expecting a catastrophe, if anything!
And the catastrophe does come, you just have to wait until they’re about to reveal the aliens who turn out to be the enemy. Or perhaps catastrophe is too strong a word, but it certainly isn’t pretty! Some environments are poorly done and there are a few obvious miniature sequences, but otherwise, as I said, it’s above expectations. It’s really not a bad film, just terribly boring and without all that much substance. The script is its worst enemy, but that’s what happens when you reuse and exploit what others have done first!
