Descendants of Darkness of darkness is an independent film from 2026. as with almost all independent films it comes with a shitload of credits and logos of the verious parties contributing to produce the film. This, of course, has nothing to do with anything qualitywise, but I still get kind of annoyed when I have to wade minutes after minute of logos before getting to the actual film. yes, i know that this is a luxury problem and I usually don’t mention it at all. And I don’t honestly know why i thought about it this particular time. it just feels like the opening credits never ends.
Once they are complete or whatever there’s a pretty cool scene though. A schene where a news achor get a late message and read on the piece of paper that there’s going to be a new film produced by Phil herman called Amityville: Descendants of Darkness and that the funding is ongoing. apparently it has raised $3000 in the first week alone. what makes this funny is or course, that this is the actual movie we’re about to watch. I don’t know if it’s a nod to the crowd funding community that there really are perks to be obtained by contributing to these prodject.
As this is an anthology containing four different stories with association to the original Amityville Horror legend, there is a presenter telling us what story we are to watch and what connection it can possible have to the Amityville saga. well, nowadays there are so many movies have amityville in the title that it’s almost impossible to distinguish which ones that actually has any real connection to the original tale. I feel that most of them are just cashing in on the name. I don’t think Descendants of Darkness falls into that trap though.
There ar nods to the original films planted throughout the movie in all the segments. I quess that you won’t get some of them if you are not acquainted with the original movies, but on the other hand, if you’re reading this, you probably know the original movies too. In either case i think it’s great way to pay homage. It’s not over the top and usually not showed down the throught of the audience. In other words, the audience isn’t under estimated. we understand what’s happening without being told in immentence detail what going to happen.
Sure, the acting is quite over the top in some of the segments ant the dialog could have been more natural and not sounding so forced as it does, but over all I think it delivers the message just fine. Of course, you can tell that there hasn’t been millions of dollar ploghed into the project but that’s part of the charm too. You don’t always have to use a million dollars to make a movie. Sometimes you get a long way with just loving the genre! Although, i couldn’t figure out why there was music that could have been used in a halloween homage instead in this one.
Throughout the film there are som nice and impressive special effects. Now, i’m not a film maker and i have no idea haw to make it happen but I’m honestly amazed by some of them. And I’m not just talking about makeup, blood, guts and gore. Descendants of Darkness is more than just that. of course there is blood and death but it’s not the only thing going on. And I think that if it wasn’t for the supernatural nods amd winks it wouldn’t have been half as entertaining as a film.
