Countdown to Extinction is the fifth studio album by Megadeth. As they now have stated that their 2026 selftitles “Megadeth” album is their last, I can boldly say that this is their best ever album. At least in my mind. The tempo is slower and some might claim that it’s a sellout towards a more commercial sound. Maybe it is, but I don’t really care, to me this remains the crown jewel of Megadeth’s career!
I find it more satisfying than the previous album Rust in Peace that will probably go down in history as their most influential album ever. That is, if it hasn’t gone down in history as that yet. I think it has.
As I said, this is slower and not played at full speed all the way through. I think that adds to the dynamics and I think that is something needed for most bands. There are very few that can go all in for their entire career. I’m not even sure if Slayer could pull that off. Or maybe they’re the exception that makes the rule?
Anyway, Dave Mustaine is of course involved in all the songs. Often David Ellefson has a songwriting credit alongside him. Marty Friedman has surprisingly few credits which surprised me. I would think that he was a driving force to a more commercial sound and “easier” and more conventionally structured songs. Even Nick Mendoza has a writing credit on the title track Countdown to Extinction and on Ashes in Your Mouth. The latter along with Psycotron is not among my favorites though.
I think the opening half of the album is the strongest where Skin o’ My Teeth sets the tempo and Symphony of Destruction, an anthem, sets the heavy tone. The album is brilliantly produced by Dave Mustiane himself if I interpret Wikipedia correctly. The sound is so dry and so tight it’s almost unbelievable.
This is a true masterpiece in my mind!
