Goliath is the 13th album of the American Thrash Metal band Exodus. The first time I listened to it I thought it was actually a bit too long for its own good. That can often happen when the music is pretty intense or extreme. Not that Goliath is very extreme. I guess that it could have been considered to be so twenty years ago, but these days there are so many more extreme subgenres that it’s really nothing to raise your eyebrows over. At least as far as the extreme factor comes in.
There are ten songs and the total playtime is around 54 minutes. It can be pretty intense! For me, I think that the vocals are a bit annoying but that the music, and especially the guitars and riffs makes up for it. But not the entire album sounds the same either. I mean, obviously there are different songs and structures on them but the production also differs a bit I think.
First off, I noticed harmonies I was totally not expecting. I didn’t really feel like they belonged there. But that was the first playthrough, at the third I didn’t notice it anymore. I had probably assimilated myself by then. I think the final impression becomes a pretty eclectic album overall. Of course there are different tempos throughout the album but also different styles. Some songs are more melodious and some are very bluesy, with lots of pentatonic scales in the solos in particular. Some are pure rock and roll! Well, it’s all Thrash of course, you know what I mean!
