The Whisper starts out with this woman in the forest. Suddenly she sees a strange symbol on a tree. Of course, she gets curious and walks out to it to have a closer look. At the root of the tree there’s a notebook. She picks it up and suddenly she kind of hear whispering voices, or at least we do. We also get a glimpse of what the journal says. Someone has investigated this symbol before she got into the picture. A cult is mentioned and the journal explicitly tells that everyone who has come close to RUN!
It’s a very effective opening. It might not be very logical, but that’s beside the point. Short films are not like feature films. They are often just one scene or two and you’ll have to make the most of it. But of course, she can’t leave it alone and she’ll pay for it.
It’s just mysterious enough to be interesting and just right when it comes to withholding information from us. We’re not told everything and it’s kondo of just suggested what happens. At the same time there can be no doubt.
For a movie only being 7 minutes including the credits, it’s amazing. Every shot, every look of the actors in such a movie matters. I think it was very well executed, and since I know there is also a second short film before the feature film came along I’m very curious if we can get some more clues in the sequel, or if it’s even a sequel in the conventional sense.
There is just one shot I wish they hadn’t included. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, but the very final scene makes it a little clishé. Easy for me to say though. I could probably not make a movie to save my life. All I can do is to have opinions about others’ talents. Sad really.
I liked this one!
