Maliora is the third studio album from the Swedish rock band Ghost. I have already stated that my feelings regarding their image is positive and that I like the contrast between that and the music. Maliora is the first album of theirs where I don’t see an image of a live performance for my inner self as I listen. That is a good thing. That means that the music actually melts together in another and better way than before. I don’t see the clash between the two sides at all. The music is just music and the instrumentation and the vocals act in symbiosis with each other.
I would say that with Malaria Ghost transformers from a rock band to a hardrock band. The vocals are still very laidback and not as energetic as you might expect from an ordinary hardrock band but I think Tobias Forge found the right path with this album. And it’s probably a good idea not to write the majority of the material himself. It seems more like a band effect than before and producer Klas Åhlund is also credited with writing credits on many of the songs. Maybe you need that special touch?
Is there more to be said? Not really, Maliora is an album that I would imagine myself not tiring on very quickly. I think I could listen to this over and over again for a limited time at least. It’s a huge leap forward in my mind. I guess you needed two albums to set the formula completely. If I were to listen extensively I might even find some songs stuck in my mind as the first two albums were more or less anonymous music- and melodywise for me. The sound philosophy reminds me a bit about another Swedish band – B.W.O.
