I’m not sure whether all these films where different monsters or characters face off against each other started with Alien vs. Predator. In any case, a whole wave of such films appeared, along with a lot of rumors. It seemed as though fans enjoyed inventing the most absurd combinations possible, and I have to agree that there is a certain humor in that. If it were the alien that fought the Predator and first appeared in Alien, it would be a rather one-sided fight. I suspect, however, that the reason for altering it here likely comes down to copyright issues. Instead, the film seems to wink at its more famous predecessor in a few scenes.
I sincerely hope this was not made in earnest. It feels a bit like Syfy meets The Asylum. By that, I mean it is an entertaining film, and I believe that is precisely the intention. If taken seriously, it would rank among the greatest “turkeys” of all time. No, I am convinced that is not the case. There is even a certain tongue-in-cheek quality when the film sexualizes the female ninja. Quite amusing in places, actually.
Not everything is necessarily intentional, but overall I see no other explanation. The action sequences, particularly from the ninjas’ perspective, are quite entertaining. I am less impressed by the monster that takes on the role of the alien. As mentioned earlier, it feels like a nod to the original creature. It is difficult to articulate precisely in writing, as most of these references are fleeting. It has to do with movement patterns, but also with how it behaves in certain situations.
Still, regardless of how much homage is present, the film becomes a bit too silly for my taste. It is entertaining, and the ninja action—jumping, climbing trees, and so on—is undeniably inventive. But the monster becomes excessive, and the stereotypes feel overdone. There is, admittedly, a comedic sidekick—something not typically seen in more serious ninja films—but the overall tone becomes somewhat stiff.
As light entertainment for an hour and a half, the film works reasonably well. The silliness can be set aside for a while, but I do not think it has much rewatch value. I am not usually one to rewatch films in any case, but this one might only work as a hangover movie. Sober, I will likely never watch it again.
