The Darkness – Dreams on Toast – 2025
Dreams on Toast is the eights studio album by British hardrock band The Darkness. I bought the first two albums when they were released, then I kinda lost interest in the band. It’s mysterious, because I don’t know why. As far as I remember I lied those two first albums very much. But as I do basic research for this review I noticed that The Darkness actually broke up after their second and that it would take from 2005 until 2012 until the third album was released.
I think that kind of hibernation takes it’s toll on any fan unless the band is superfamous. With that said. It’s not a shocker that I forgot about the band and never heard those albums until Dreams on Toast. However, when I consume this album I realize that I must get my hands om those “missing” albums as well. This is really good and have already grown on my just after the second listen.
I guess you could call it glam rock of some sort. Not to be confused with Pop Metal or Hair Metal, which often seems to be synonymous with glam these days. Of course, it’s not like the 70’s glam rock either, with bands like Sweet and Gary Glitter. This is more modern but still very catchy melodies and Justin Hawkins sings as great as ever. Maybe there aren’t as high note to reach as on the early albums but it still sounds very demanding.
So bottom line. Very playful music, on one hand experimental, on the other hand absolutely under control. Great melodies that doesn’t fall under the usual conventions. I like this a lot!
