That Ace Frehley has never been a great singer is no secret. He has managed to get by with what he can and it has worked quite well. Here I would like to say that he may be giving his best performance ever. Space Invader is light years better than the previous album Anomaly on that level. Of course, that is not the only level it is better on, in almost every respect this one beats its predecessor.
It is hard rock that you can easily get carried away with, good melodies and fantastic guitar playing. There has never been any doubt that Ace Frehley can handle a guitar! Everything may not be great, but if you give it a try, you will discover that there are actually more positive aspects than negative ones to take part in. Sometimes it sounds classically modern while there are also vibes of Ace’s time in Kiss in one or two of the songs.
Not I actually wanted to mention Kiss at all because I think Ace does well on its own, but there is simply no getting around the reference. In its best moments it is really good while on a few occasions it becomes almost unbearable. This is especially true of the cover version of Steve Miller Band’s The Joker. Which feels completely uninspired and completely out of its playful context. Overall, and despite a few lows, I like the album more than the previous one.
