Risk was the eighth studio album by Megadeth. It represents something new, kind of a crossover metal album, but it’s not a crossover towards Death Metal or Punk. This is quite the opposite, it’s more a cross over to softer Rock. In fact, most of the time it’s not Metal at all.
It’s actually hard to believe that this is the same band that gave us Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction and Youtanasia. Of course, it’s impossible not to recognize the voice of Dave Mustaine, but that’s about it. Toward the ending of Risk there’s one or two songs that could pass for decent but that’s about it. I don’t find much redeeming about Risk at all.
I guess it’s an attempt to go even further towards a commercial sound and song structure. But for me it doesn’t work at all. It was the last album to feature Marty Friedman, who has more song writing credits than ever, and new drummer is Jimmy DeGrasso.
