Tygers of Pan Tang is a band I haven’t really kept up with over the years. So I had to do some reading. Not that it has much to do with the music on the new album, of course. But it strikes me that the band seems to have gone on hiatus twice over the years and that there has always been at least one original member in the lineup — though not always guitarist Robb Weir, who now seems to be the elder statesman of the group. That turned into a long sentence…
Musically, I have no complaints. Tygers of Pan Tang is classic-style hard rock, and you can immediately tell this is a band rooted in the NWOBHM movement. It sounds a bit more modern these days, and the production doesn’t feel “old” at all. In fact, it’s quite refreshing to listen to some unpretentious hard rock for a change. Then again, who decides what’s pretentious or not? Isn’t that in the eye of the beholder?
Anyway, I’ll keep this short. I like it. This is exactly the kind of music I grew up with—straightforward, honest, real hard rock without all the frills.
