Invasion of your Privacy is the second album by the hardrock band Ratt. It was a commercial success at the time and sold Gold in Japan and double platinum in the US. I first heard about it on the weekly one hour hardrock radio channel here in Sweden. The one hour a week was pretty new then. Previously there was nothing at all. I discovered so much music during this time. Of course, I was also influenceable as I was 15 years old at the time.
The “hit” was the opening track You’re in Love. I remember playing this over and over again. I don’t recall if I plagued the whole album with the same frenzy though. Of course, the cover art really appealed to my 15 year old self as well.
Invasion of your Privacy and, in fact – Ratt, is pretty mild music and I’m a bit surprised that I liked it so much. I had a tendency to ignore music that was too soft or tame at the time. I reasoned that bands like Night Ranger and the likes were kind of fake Hardrock. It was a little harder Rock than the average Pop songs for sure but certainly not Metal. Too commercial and not “rebel” enough.
I am now 55 years old and I still “get” what I was trying to comprehend back then. But on the other hand I have opened up wide for other stuff than the hardest Metal. In fact, I think the hardest Metal is usually to hard for me these days. It says a little bit about my journey but it also says something about the musical climate. How it was back then and how it is now.
I think that Invasion of your Privacy have aged pretty well. I think that a remaster could be a nice think to sink my teeth into but it’s still a good album. It’s probably better now, that I ever though about back in the day. The melodies are not “hit” material for the most part but they’re certainly melodic and right op the alley for fans of classic Hardrock from the 80’s.
I won’t begin to listen to Invasion of your Privacy frequently but it’s a nice album and it deserves some attention 40 years after its release!
