Kreator – Enemy of God – 2005

Enemy of God

Enemy of God is the 2005 album from Kreator. It’s probably the album I’ve listed the most in their entire discography. No, who am I kidding, it is most certainly the album I have listened to the most. I kind of had it on repeat when I first discovered it and I’ve probably listened to it a hundred times or more over the years. It has the perfect mix between the typical Kreatiot aggression and melodic parts. It’s brutal, but it never gets as extreme as some of their other albums.

Already from the opening title track I love Enemy of God. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the fact that Mille Patrozza now is the only one credited for writing the songs, just like he was on the previous album Violent Revolution. My guess is that he was the driving force in the creation of the earlier albums as well anyway. But what do I know? I can’t argue with what I hear.

The personnel on Enemy of God are the same as on Violent Revolution too. Mille Petrozza och vocals and Guitar, Lead guitar by Sami Yli-Sirniö, bass duties by Christian Geisler, and Jürgen Veil behind the drum kit. And speaking about the drums. I think this is the first time that I really noticed the drumming aggression. Of course, that has been present all along. Maybe it’s that it’s a little more varied on Enemy of God, better fills and not drumming furiously.

I realize that I’m going out on a limb here since I can’t really remember such details from the earlier albums. Maybe it’s just that the melodies on this initially attracted me so much and that I’ve burned it in my consciousness?

Now, Enemy of God was released in 2005, so it’s 20 years old by now. It would be a bold statement that this is the definite album by the band. There are a few newer albums still to take into consideration, and since Kreator is still active, it’s hard to say what they will come up with in the coming years. But one thing is for certain, from the band’s early efforts until Enemy of God, this is the one that stands out. This is a masterful album!
