Weapons – 2025

Weapons

Weapons is a movie I heard a lot about but never gave myself the time to actually watch it. Something had to be made about that. So, I finally took the time and what I found was actually something I really enjoyed!

It starts off with a narrator, a young girl, telling us the beginning of the story. How 17 children from one school class suddenly went outside in the middle of the night and disappeared. Ak ready there I sense a bit of an inconsistency. Who is that? Why does he know the start of the story without seemingly being involved in it himself? Maybe not very important, but it ran through my mind in a tenth of a second. Maybe it’s logical, maybe I’m overthinking it.

Of course these disappearances are a great tragedy for the community, and especially for the parents losing their children. Crisis meetings are being held and although no one really knows what’s happened the idea that since it happened in only one class, the teacher might somehow be involved. Of course, she does seem to have a troubled past and as we go along we find out that she has been in trouble before. Mostly because she was caring too much though and “being unprofessional”. Speaking from experience, I’d rather have an unprofessional teacher who actually cares than someone “just doing the job”. But that’s me.

Anyway, first off, we get to follow her as a start. Her everyday life when she’s being threatened by some of the parents and how she deals with the tragedy. We see her getting to the liquor store and I would say she quickly knows her way to the exact brand of booze she wants to buy. That’s telling something isn’t it?

We can see the character build up and what kind of person she seems to be. It’s kinda slow story telling but still interesting. So far I don’t see anything “horror” over Weapons. But soon I realized that Weapons is one of those movies where we get to follow the same kind of event from multiple peoples point of view. Partly dealing with the loss of the children of course but also everyday life.

The stories of each character are weaved together and somehow gives us a more complete picture of what happens. I like that things that were incomprehensible from one character’s perspective suddenly makes total sense when we get a piece of the puzzle from another angle.

The pacing of the story also enhanced over the course of the 2 hours of the film. Thank God for that. I was ok with the slow pace in the beginning since it still explored the uncertainty and the unknown but to watch over two hours in that pace would have been unbearable. With each new angle I think the pace is increased and it’s a really tense and exciting mystery to unravel.

Weapons 2025 2

Somewhere along the way we start getting more pieces of the puzzle and finally even get the cause of the events. It’s a long way there but I think the reward is great. It’s macabre and the little narrating kid from the beginning was totally speaking the truth when he said that many people died under mysterious circumstances during the events. There is a little gore along the way, but always totally believable and when it does occur it’s very macabre.

Weapons 2025 1

from a slow-paced mystery, Weapons evolves into a crescendo of violence and when the very end comes I guess you have to decide for yourself if it’s a happy ending or not. It’s not mysterious as if we never got to know what happened, more like “what’s going to happen now?” kind of way.

I enjoyed Weapons but the title somehow remains a mystery to me!
