Overkill – White Devil Armory – 2014

White Devil Armory

White Devil Armory is the third Overkill album that I’ve written about, I think. It’s a band that, largely due to bassist DD Verni, is easy to recognize. They clearly have a special sound. I’ve previously referred to them playing technical Thrash Metal but I don’t think that’s right. I guess I can blame it on the fact that I was young and inexperienced when I wrote that. I’d rather call this fairly traditional when it comes to Thrash Metal. It’s also a well-produced sound on the album and actually the best I’ve heard Overkill do.

Of course, I don’t have all of their albums, but from what I’ve heard, this is the most well-crafted album! There are undeniably melodies that become clear after just a few listens, and that’s not uncommon on the Thrash scene. This edition of the album also contains two bonus tracks, one of which is a Nazareth cover – Miss Misery. The second, The Fight Song, doesn’t really fit into the concept and it’s easy to understand why it ended up as a bonus track. It’s a bit too melodic to really fit in. With a slightly different sound it might have been on an album by Alestorm or something like that. Not because it’s about a pirate theme but as I said it’s more Heavy Metal than Thrash. Nothing wrong with that but as I said it doesn’t really fit into the whole.
