Annihilator – Remains – 1997
Remains is the album that came before Criteria for a Black Widow and after Refresh the Demon. It’s the sixth studio Album by Annihilator, and I have missed to wrote about it for some reason. Maybe the redon is that I don’t like it very much? It’s very different from the other Annihilator album I have written about so far. It’s almost like the typical signature sound isn’t there at all.
I know a drum machine was used for it and it’s basically a Jeff Waters solo album. It isn’t the first (or last time) he laid down the bass tracks as well as the guitars but I think he took it one step further here. He handled the vocals. And there is essentially no one else involved in the creation of Remains at all. Well, there are a couple of writing credits and there are som background sining on some track för that’s essentially it.
Apparently Jeff Waters was in a pretty dark place when Remains was conceived. He just went into his own studio and played around to get an album. It must be a great feeling not to have to take anyone else into consideration. There’s a diversity of tracks. Most sound odd to me, this is not how a Annihilator album should sound to me. He claims that he was heavily influenced by dance music at the time, although not being into that sort of thing, he was still exposed to it at such a massive amount that it became a special sounding record.
There are lines here and there that I can connect to other songs or other albums but most of the time Remains just are on it’s own. It’s not my bag…
